Journalist and historian Louisa Thomas prefaced a question to Hermione Lee in the Summer 2013 issue of The Paris Review with:

“Virginia Woolf wrote a lot about how difficult it is to know anyone, even— or especially—oneself. When she was working on a memoir, she wrote,

“I see myself as a fish in a stream; deflected; held in place; but cannot describe the stream.”
